Named after James Ainslie, an early settler of Canberra, Mt Ainslie lies at the end of one of the main axes of Walter Burley Griffin's plan for Canberra, with Capital Hill and the Parliament House at the opposite end. The Australian War Memorial, Reconciliation Place, and the museum of Australian Democracy all lie on this axis with Anzac Parade and Federation Mall, on one side of the lake forming major connecting lines.
